Workshop on the OMAC Observatory on the Beninese Coast

Ecohydrology: a lever for sustainable and resilient development

Background

An observatory to better understand and manage the Mono–Ahémé–Couffo complex

The coastline of Benin is a strategic area with major ecological, economic and social value. It extends from Grand-Popo to Sèmè-Podji through Ouidah and Cotonou, and concentrates essential activities such as fishing, tourism, maritime and fluvial transport, urban development and port infrastructure.

However, this area is under increasing pressure from coastal erosion, marine flooding, land salinisation, shoreline artificialisation, pollution, biodiversity loss and the growing effects of climate change. These dynamics weaken coastal ecosystems, including beaches, lagoons and mangroves, as well as riparian communities.

In this context, the OMAC-BENIN Observatory is a strategic tool to strengthen knowledge, environmental monitoring and decision support. It aims to support integrated, participatory and sustainable management of the Mono–Ahémé–Couffo fluvio-lagoon complex through reliable data production, harmonised monitoring methods and the mobilisation of institutional, scientific and community stakeholders.
